Hardware Is Coming Home

For most of the last forty years, "Canadian technology company" meant software, and the advice to a Canadian who wanted to build physical machines was simple: move. The capital was in California, the supply chains were in Shenzhen, and the ambition — after the Arrow, after de Havilland, after the slow sale of the branch plants — was elsewhere.

That advice is going stale, and it is worth being precise about why.

The scene as it stands

The density is already real. In the Toronto–Waterloo corridor, robotics and advanced manufacturing companies have grown up around the university co-op pipelines that once fed Waterloo graduates straight to Cupertino. In Vancouver, General Fusion has spent two decades making magnetized target fusion a Canadian specialty. MDA in Brampton is building Canadarm3 and a commercial satellite constellation. Montreal carries aerospace mass that most countries would kill for — CAE, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Bombardier's remains and its diaspora. Add the battery-materials push tied to Quebec hydro power and the critical-minerals belt, and the map is fuller than it has been since the 1950s.

Why this decade is different

Three things changed at once. First, the re-shoring turn: after 2020, "where is it made" became a question customers and governments ask again, and a NATO member with cheap clean electricity, aluminum, and machining capacity is a credible answer. Second, the tools collapsed the seed-stage cost of hardware — a two-person team with a CNC machine, an FDM printer, and off-the-shelf motor controllers can now reach a first article that used to require a funded lab. Third, defence and space budgets in allied countries opened to non-US suppliers in a way they simply were not open a decade ago.

None of that removes the structural problems. Canadian institutional capital still treats a machine shop as exotic risk. Procurement still moves at Arrow-era speed. Scaling headcount in manufacturing still runs into a housing market that repels the skilled trades.

What this journal is for

The thesis of Canadian Machines is that the builders now outnumber the excuses, and that they mostly don't know each other yet. The software scene had twenty years of blogs, meetups, and folklore to compound on; the hardware scene has quiet workshops in Cambridge and Delta and Laval. This site exists to write the folklore down — the shop visits, the first articles, the procurement war stories — so the next founder starts from the current frontier instead of from zero.
